Thanks for reading Matthew. I agree that tagging is subjective and for a long time I was against the rigidity of tagging structures, but I've since converted and now rely on this structure as a starting point for my clients (and the team that works with me) to follow. Not every business is the same and so the tagging structure will need to change.

Couldn't agree with you more though, use something like this as a starting point and as you said, 'Do what makes sense to you'.

In reply to <a href="https://www.blickdigital.com/5-rules-for-naming-your-infusionsoft-tags/#comment-200">Judith Baker</a>.

I would argue that there is no need to put the number first. It's all preference but the way I would create this particular setup would be to place the Company Name first (usually abbreviated) then the number that coincides with each category then the category name.

ex. Company A -> 01. Profile
ex. Company B -> 01. Profile

This will keep all categories/tags of one company together in a list but still be in order of numbered categories.

Sub categories could be handled numerous ways based on how you want to view your information. (be very cautious of having too many sub tags. Try to make the tag name describe itself as best it can without having a ton of subs.)

ex. "Company A -> 01. Profile" is category and tag is "01. Type - Prospect: 01 Unqualified"
ex. "Company B -> 01. Profile" is category and tag is "01. Type - Prospect: 02 Qualified"
ex. "Company C -> 01. Profile" is category and tag is "01. Type - Customer: 02 Promoter"

So Company C tag would look like this when searching for it: "Company C -> 01. Profile -> 01. Type - Customer: 01 Promoter"

Now... I would argue that this could be shortened to "Company C -> 01. Profile -> 02. Customer: 01 Promoter" if you don't need a ton of stuff under Profile (with 01. Prospect being before it)

Again I just want to point out that at some point this becomes worthless because you will end up sifting through 100s of tags when trying to find the one you want, due to multiple tags being named exactly the same with 2 or 3 companies so the less sub categories and the more descriptive each tag is the better. IMHO YMMV

Having said all of this, tagging is VERY subjective. Do what makes sense to you and allows your brain to find things the easiest. The only time you need 100% rigidity is if you work as a team in Infusionsoft so that anyone at any time can find the tag/contact/etc they need.

Thanks... When something is new and it takes some time of actually using it to see the pitfalls, I didn't want to get three months down the road with having set it up wrong as it would be a mess!

So to recap:
We give each company a unique category number, company name, category name AND THEN we also start the tag with the company name (unless there is a date that goes first. )

The subcategories are will also have unique numbers, company name and subcategory.

So now I have to make a spreadsheet to keep it all straight.

Thank you again.

02. Question:) Do you give sub-numbers to sub-categories? Will Infusionsoft recognize a sub-category number(and would you use a period between numbers so they will pull it up in order). Example 1.1 Profile->Prospect->unqualified, 1.2 Profile->Prospect->qualified, 1.3->Prospect->Customer....etc

Hmmm... now that I look at it would seems like you need to put the numbers first-- 01.Company A->Profile, 02.Company A->Campaign Status, 03.Company A-> Historical..etc… and 10.Company B-> Profile, 11.Company B->Campaign Status, 12.Company B->Historical etc... Much easier to read with the numbers first!
